1999

The Committee of Relatives of Disappeared Migrants of El Progreso, Honduras (COFAMIPRO) was born in September 1999 as an effort of the radio program “Sin Fronteras”, today “Abriendo Fronteras”, which is broadcast on Radio Progreso.

.

The Committee was made up of organizational, training and communication efforts. Our first actions were to protest before the United States embassy for the mistreatment of undocumented migrants. We also demand greater support from the Honduran Foreign Ministry in the search for the disappeared migrants.

.

Given the indifference of the state, we decided to take the initiative to look for our relatives and organized the first Caravan of relatives of migrants in December 1999 that reached the Mexican border with Guatemala.

.

We demanded and it was achieved together with other organizations that a special fund will be created to finance the repatriation of bodies of migrants who died during the journey to the United States.
